Understanding Plumbing Basics

As a new homeowner, I can tell you that things aren't always as simple as they appear. I started thinking about it a few years ago, and I realized that there were some serious problems with our plumbing system. We had issues with drains working correctly and toilets flushing like they should, so I started focusing more heavily on understanding the basics of our plumbing system. Within a few short months the entire system was operating more fluidly because of a few changes that I made, so I wanted to create a blog all about my journey. Check out these articles to learn more about the plumbing basics.

Got A Plumber For An Hour? Plan Ahead

Jorge Alexander

When you hire a plumbing contractor, they almost always charge by the hour for labor. Most of them will let you know what that hour costs. If the work you have for them may not cover an hour, plan ahead. If you are going to buy an hour's time with a plumber, make sure you get an hour's time. Here is how.

Unclogging a Drain or Toilet, Plus Something Else

Most plumbers are able to unclog a drain or toilet in about twenty minutes or less. Rarely do these clogs add up to something more complicated, and they almost never require an hour of a plumber's time to fix. A quick augering of the drain or the toilet, a plunger plunge or two, a bucket of water for the toilet, and it is done. That said, if you only need a sink drain or the toilet cleared, have a couple other plumbing odd jobs on the list just in case. Fixing tap leaks could easily make up the time difference between the first clog clearing and the remaining minutes in the hour.

Installing the Ice Maker from Your Refrigerator and Something Else

Most homeowners do not realize that it is usually a plumber that connects the water line in the home to the ice maker in your fridge. This process may take about thirty to forty-five minutes, so long as there is a direct plumbing line located close to or underneath your refrigerator. If the plumber completes the job in less than forty-five minutes, consider asking him/her to fix/replace the sprayer nozzle on the sprayer in your kitchen sink. If you already have the parts, this installation will fill out the remaining minutes of the hour.

Water Heater Maintenance and Something Else

If you hire a plumber to check and drain your water heater, this does not take very long either. The plumber may take note of any corrosion and rust your water heater has and suggest what you should do about it, but the draining process is done in about five to twenty minutes, depending on the size of your water heater. If you also have a boiler heating your home or apartment building, consider asking the plumber to do some quick maintenance work and check on that too. Boilers and boiler maintenance always take a little bit longer to work on. The plumbing contractor can do these things simultaneously if the boiler and water heater are close to each other.
