Understanding Plumbing Basics

As a new homeowner, I can tell you that things aren't always as simple as they appear. I started thinking about it a few years ago, and I realized that there were some serious problems with our plumbing system. We had issues with drains working correctly and toilets flushing like they should, so I started focusing more heavily on understanding the basics of our plumbing system. Within a few short months the entire system was operating more fluidly because of a few changes that I made, so I wanted to create a blog all about my journey. Check out these articles to learn more about the plumbing basics.

Upgrading Your Garage With A New Sink

Jorge Alexander

Adding a sink to your home's garage can greatly improve the functionality of this space. However, it is not an upgrade that is simple to make, as there can be substantial planning and considerations that will have to be assessed.

Avoid Attempting To Route The New Sink To An Existing Drain

A homeowner may assume that they will be able to simplify the installation of their new sink by connecting it to an existing drain line. However, this can overload the drain line and lead to the drain overflowing and potentially causing water damage to the interior. The proper installation for the sink will involve connecting it to the primary drain line of the home. Depending on the location of your garage and the design of your home, this may involve cutting through the foundation of the garage so that the primary drain line can be reached.

Apply For A Permit Before Starting The Sink Installation Project

Many communities will require permits to be obtained in order to complete major plumbing work to a home. Depending on your area, the addition of a new sink to the garage may count as a major upgrade that requires a permit, as well as inspections. Failing to obtain this permit can have some serious consequences for the homeowner. These can range from fines to paying for repairs, in order to bring the new sink into line with building codes. Luckily, the process of applying for this permit will likely be fairly simple, and the fees are likely minimal, given the relatively low cost of this project. Additionally, you should review whether your homeowner's insurance policy needs to be updated after this work is done to the plumbing system.

Be Mindful Of The Limits On The Substances That You Can Pour Down The Garage Drain

You will need to appreciate the limits on the substances that you can safely pour down the drain of your garage sink. In particular, individuals will ant to avoid attempting to dispose of oil or other potentially damaging fluids down this drain. Generally, you will want to avoid putting anything down this drain that you would not pour down the drains in your home. In addition to potentially being harmful to the environment, this could also result in major damage to your plumbing. Oil may be thick enough to be able to clog your sewer line. Additionally, some harsh chemicals may be acidic or strong enough to degrade the sewer line.
